Dental professionals recommend that most patients have a thorough checkup along with an in-office teeth cleaning at six-month intervals in order to maintain good oral health. If the patient is at high risk for oral disease or if he or she has undergone treatment for an advanced stage of periodontitis the time between regular appointments will be less.

Regularly scheduled appointments give your dentist and hygienist the best chance of diagnosing a problem while it is still minor and can be treated by making changes in things like home care and diet. Dental x-rays can be taken to find a developing cavity or see that a tooth has become impacted below the gumline.

Bacterial plaque can build up in no time especially if your regimen for home care isn’t what it should be. Once plaque turns to tartar it can only be successfully removed by a dental hygienist. The point is to keep this from happening by brushing and flossing every day. A diet of healthy foods along with the vitamin D and calcium that contributes to the strength of your teeth and gums is important in the fight against tooth decay and gum disease.

It has been determined that a healthy mouth can be related to your overall well being, poor oral health can be linked to heart disease and diabetes. Schedule your next dental appointment today, call Solar Dental Specialities @ 720-739-1630 in Parker, CO.

Some tooth stains can be associated with the aging process in that the years of wear and tear do take a toll. As we age our tooth enamel thins and the layer of dentin just underneath may yellow and will begin to show through. Chipping, food stains and injuries may also cause discoloration.

Extrinsic stains are the ones that are seen on the surface of the tooth enamel. They are usually caused by an overexposure to dark colored foods and drinks such as red wine or berries. Intrinsic stains on the other hand, that are not related to age can be the result of having been treated with certain antibiotics during childhood or experiencing internal bleeding after a trauma that caused the dentin to darken prematurely.

Your dentist will be able to qualify your symptoms and recommend treatment accordingly. If your stains are extrinsic professional teeth cleaning followed up by daily brushing with a whitening formula toothpaste may be able to remove them. Whitening systems both in office and for home use are often used to remove more unsightly staining. Composite bonding or a dental veneer are other alternatives.

Most extrinsic stains can be prevented by limiting exposure to outside forces such as stain-producing foods and upping your level of home care. Ask your dental hygienist for recommendations.

Being a family doesn’t mean that you all have to use the same toothpaste, not everyone likes the same brand or flavor. Fortunately, there are many types to choose from depending on personal preference and specific needs.

Whitening formulas, for instance, promise to brighten your teeth as it cleans them while others are made to decrease the sensitivity that may occur with age or when certain medications contribute to dry mouth syndrome. Sensitivity toothpaste may be beneficial to older adults.

Toothpaste used to come in either spearmint or peppermint but today’s flavors range all the way from mint to cherry to bubblegum, even chocolate. Kids will have fun experimenting but because of their vulnerability to tooth decay be sure they use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, no matter what the flavor.

So what about the teenagers in your life? This is a time when peer approval is most important and good impressions count for a lot. A whitening toothpaste can help to give your teen the healthy smile that he or she is going for. A fresh breath is just a bonus!

Toothpaste doesn’t have to be a one size fits all proposition. The main thing is that everyone in the family brushes twice a day but if they don’t like the taste of the product they are less likely to follow the regimen.

You did the research, had a professional evaluation done and now you have your new denture in place. Next you need to find out everything there is to know about how to care for your new teeth and what to expect from them.

Although wearing a denture is not the same as having your natural teeth, there is some similarity. You will need to brush your denture every day just as you did your teeth, in order to prevent staining and to remove food particles. The only difference is that you will use a specially made toothbrush and a non-abrasive paste. There are many brands on the market today, always check the label for the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association.

Don’t let your denture dry out, it could lose its shape. When you’re not wearing it keep your denture in a soaking solution or in cool water to avoid shrinkage. Ask your dentist for product recommendations.

Your new denture will most likely need a bit of adjustment, most do. Your dentist will arrange for a follow-up appointment just for this purpose. Home repair kits are not recommended.

A new denture will take some getting used to but be sure to let your dentist know if you experience any unexpected complications.

Parents know how important it is to provide themselves and their children with a nutritional diet for the good of their overall general health. If you have a family member who is particularly vulnerable to oral disease, however, you will want to concentrate those efforts towards the prevention of cavities or gum disease.

Plaque is enemy number one when it comes to the health of our teeth. It is the film of bacteria that forms over the teeth and deteriorates the strength of our tooth enamel. Without the protective qualities of the enamel, our teeth will become even more prone to infectious bacteria. The more sugar we put into our mouths the higher the risk of a plaque attack.

When your teeth are exposed to a sugary substance for any length of time it increases your risk for tooth decay. That puts candies like taffy or all day suckers at the top of a list of foods to avoid along with highly sugary sodas or juice drinks, even diet soda is highly acidic.

Tooth enamel is strong but it isn’t invincible. Biting down on a hard object like an ice cube or trying to open a package with your teeth can cause breakage or chips in your tooth enamel which will require professional restoration.
